A liquid or gaseous medium is fed from a central station (10) to a number of terminal stations (20) via a pipe network (30). Each terminal station includes measuring equipment (21) for providing data which are transmitted via a medium to a receiver in the central station. The medium in the pipes is used as the transmission medium. Measurement signals in the respective terminal stations are converted into acoustic pulse sequences which may be encoded with station-identifying words. Alternatively, the terminal stations transmit their data at a predetermined time enabling identification of the terminal stations at the central station.
