Data processing system (28) comprising: a gateway (22) arranged to exchange data between devices (14, 16, 18) in a network (10) of devices and a remote platform (24); and a network monitoring device (30) arranged to collect network parameters from the device network (10) and report them to the gateway (22); and in which the gateway (22) is arranged to adjust its operation based on the collected network parameters, characterized in that the gateway (22) comprises a data prioritization module (34) that stores the data elements that can be collected at start from the device network (10) and associate a priority level to each data element, because the data prioritization module (34) stores a first list (38) of data elements to be collected and a second list (40) of data elements that are not to be collected, and because the data prioritization module (34) is arranged to implement a routine comprising the steps of: a. evaluate network parameters to determine the health of the network (10); and b. if it is determined that the network (10) is in poor health; removing a data item from the first list (38) of data items that are not to be collected and adding said data item to the second list (40) of data items that are not to be collected; c. also; if it is determined that the network (10) is in good health; removing a data item from the second list (40) of data items not to be collected and adding said data item to the first list (38) of data items to be collected; and then repeat said routine with stages a, b and c.
