A measurement probe (11) distance from the object (12) is determined by evaluating the capacitance between them in evaluation electronics (13) connected to the probe. The electronics contains an oscillator (14) operating in the gigahertz range connected to a frequency analyser (15) and to a measurement coaxial resonator (11) with one open end (16) representing the distance measurement reference point. The other end (17) of the resonator is connected to the oscillator. The frequency analyser forms an absolute or relative distance signal from the oscillator frequency variation dependent on the distance of the open end from the object. USE/ADVANTAGE - Usable for very short distances in relation to measuring spots as small as 0.02 microns. Ascertaining out of balance or damage on rotating grinding wheel. Suitable for both metallic and non metallic objects. Analysing vibrations of glasses, housing parts, loudspeaker diaphragms, foundations without affecting the vibrating behaviour of the measured part.
