Pallets full of wood chippings (4) are brought by roller conveyor to a prepn. table from which the offcuts pass through the field of a CCD matrix imaging camera (10) linked to a computer. The smaller cross sections are evaluated from their silhouettes and the optimal length for cutting in two planes is computed for each piece. Another conveyor (13) forwards it to two successive sawing units (14,19) followed by sorting switches (15,20) with collectors (16,20) for the sawdust and other debris. ADVANTAGE - Pieces of timber can be recycled automatically in economical and ecologically beneficial manner.
