The method of continuously measuring the damping and scattering characteristics of optical fibres (5) involves passing the fibre through one or more coupling devices (6,8,10,11) whose signals are compared with each other. The measurement light is coupled into the raw fibre material in the direction in which the fibre is eventually to be drawn from the fibre material. The fibre material can be a synthetic material such as a polycarbonate. The light is conventionally modulated and detected frequency selectively to enhance sensitivity. USE/ADVANTAGE - For optical fibre damping and dispersion property measurement. Enables properties to be measured during mfr.
