In light wave guides comprising (A) a core having refractive index n(K) and (B) sleeve of polymer of refractive index n(M), where n(K)/n(M) is more than 1.01. (1) (A) is of polycarbonate or polymer contg. units derived from opt. substd. styrene or an acrylate, methacrylate or a fluoroacrylate and (B) contains 0.1-100 % (all pts. wt) on total (B) units derived from at least one monomer of formula (1)-(3); or (2) (A) contains 0.1-100% on total (A) units derived from at least one monomer of formula (1)-(3), and (B) is of fluoropolymer; or (3) both (A) and (B) contain 0.1-100% on total (A) or (B) units derived from at least one monomer of formula (1)-(3). In formula (1)-(3) (symbols have same or different meaning in same monomer units and/or adjacent monomer units) R1-R4 = H, D, F or branched or unbranched 1-10C perfluoroalkyl R6, R6 (equitorial or axial) = H, D, or F; m = 1-4; R7, R8 = H, D, F, or 1-10C perfluoroalkyl; X = O or CH2. Thermoplastically processable polymers (I) of formula (4) x, y and z each = 0-1, and (x+y+z) = 1, where degree of polymerisation is 5-10,000. (prepn. of (I) is not described). Prepn. of light wave guides as above by extrusion of core (A) and surrounding (A) by (B) where, (a), (A) and (B) are as in (1) above; or (b) (A) is as in (2) above and (B) is derived from monomer (II) which is vinylidene fluoride, tetrafluorethylene, hexafluoropropane, fluorovinyl ether, methacrylate or alpha-fluoroacrylate ester, and/or a fluorodioxol. ADVANTAGE - Waveguides are prepd. from readily obtainable monomers, can be readily extruded, and can be used at above 100 deg.C. without substantial increase in damping and limitation of transmission length.
