A ceramic such as silicon nitride or aluminium oxide is produced in the form of a fine powder for the subsequent production of sintered workpieces. The raw material for the powder is first homogeneously moistened and then dried. After drying, the material is reduced to a powder by passing it through a sieve (10). The sieve consists of a fixed sieve element (13) with a rotating scraper (31) mounted immediately above it. The scraper rubs the material against the sieve to form a powder which is then forced thorugh the sieve. The size of the powder particles produced in this manner is smaller than the size of the sieve mesh. USE/ADVANTAGE - Production of fine powder ceramic to produce sintered workpieces with uniform porosity.
