The through-flow electric water heater uses electronic switches (7), e.g. triacs, for power control of the electric heating elements (6) within the water container (1). These switches (7) are cooled via the connection pipe (12) leading to the cold water network. A second connection pipe (17) allows the water heater to be supplied with pre-heated water, e.g. provided via a solar collector (19), or a heat pump. Pref. a mixer (21) regulates the quantity of pre-heated water and cold water fed to the water heater. A min. cold water flow is maintained, sufficient for heat dissipation from the electronic switches (7). ADVANTAGE - Prevents overheating of electronic switches when pre-heated water is used.
