Producing partially wear-resistant iron or steel castings - by coating cores with hard material which becomes dispersed in the casting surface during casting

Prodn. of partially wear protected castings of steel or grey cast iron consists of treating support cores inside the foundry mould which have a hard material or metal coating which protrudes into the casting area and during casting becomes freed from the core and dispersed in the inter layer of the casting. As the molten metal flows around the hard particles, their binding agent is volatilised or burnt off without residue. ADVANTAGE - The casting has excellent wear resistance in required areas and is produced in an economic process.
