A wood planing machine consists of a power driven revolving cutter (W) and a transverse member (8) on which saw tooth ratchet pawls (10) are mounted. Each ratchet (10) consists of a metal plate with a number of identical teeth (11) in line one behind the other, which are mounted loosely side by side. The teeth (11) dig into the unplaned surface of the wood (2) to prevent it kicking back from the cutter. The sides of the ratchet plate (10) have interlocking catches, and they are arranged in groups separated by inserts. USE/ADVANTAGE - A simpler, cheaper kick back device which is easily maintained.
