The compensation system (10) measures the diameter of the polishing wheel (1) and dependent on the result adjusts the distance (A) between the wheel axis (3) and workpiece (4), thus maintaining a desired polishing pressure. During measurement a roller (15) is brought into contact with the wheel periphery and the resulting roller rotation measured with a revolution counter (17) to determine the wheel diameter. The position of the wheel dependent on the measurement is adjusted by a leadscrew drive (7). The roller is periodically brought into contact with the wheel by a second positioning leadscrew drive (12, 13, 14).
