A catalyst (I) is claimed for aromatics hydrogenation in unrefined hydrocarbons, comprising 10-25 wt.% Mo(VI) oxide, 10-30 wt.% W(VI) oxide and (balance to 100 wt.%) Al silicate which is amorphous to X-rays (II) and to which is added 3-10 wt.% Ni in the form of Ni aluminosilicate or silicate (III) (w.r.t. total catalyst and calcd. as NiO). Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I), by mixing Ni aluminosilicate- or silicate-contg. (II) with finely ground MoO3, extruding the mixt. with addn. of ammonia soln. and PV-alcohol soln., drying the pellets obtd., igniting at 400-600 deg.C, impregnating with (NH4)2WO4 soln. (adjusted to pH 9-10 with excess ammonia) and heating. Pref. (I) contains 11-15 wt.% MoO3 and 17-25 wt.% WO3, and 3-4 wt.% NiO in the Al silicate support; total metal content of (I) is 35-50 wt.%, with Sub-Gp. VI metal trioxides and NiO in the ratio (3-10):1. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is useful for the hydrogenation of aromatics in unrefined hydrocarbon fractions, for prodn. of alkenes, dienes and aromatics by subsequent pyrolysis. W.r.t. prior-art catalysts, (I) has lower bulk density, higher mass activity, lower specific consumption of Ni, Mo and W due to the lower density and longer service life, and lower sensitivity to variations in operating temp. (lower tendency to disintegration, dust prodn. and loss of streng
