The method operates a bus system (2) with connected terminals (3-6) having access using the token passing principle involves controlling allocation of the bus to a terminal with a clock signal fed to all terminals. The clock signal is generated by one terminal responsible for the allocation of access. Each terminal contains stored information on the sequence of terminal bus accesses. The terminal monitors the clock signal. If it fails, the terminal decides which terminal takes over the allocation of access and hence the generation of the clock signal. ADVANTAGE - Enables all terminals remaining in operation after failure of one terminal to continue to communicate via bus system.
