Shutting off the flow can be achieved by either making a transverse cut into the pipe and using the cutter as a valve. A split socketed pipe forms a housing and support for a hydraulically driven circular cutter, the shaft of which forms a sleeve valve in the pipe, provided the shaft is of the same dia., as the pipe being cut into. A further development enables injection of pipe sealant through an angled branch in the socketed pipe. Sealing material can be pumped in agains the fluid flow in the pipe via a valve. Multiwalled pipes are sealed by injection of sealant. ADVANTAGE - Cost effective means of shuttting off pipes remote from pipe end, in situations where high pressure or fire make it dangerous to work at the delivery end. Uses simple equipment which is easily handled.
