This work investigates the effect of pipe support stiffness on the pressure wave velocity in a helical coil pipe during water hammer phenomenon. The coil was constrained by elastic supports with different stiffnesses. The fluid pressure and coil vibration were simultaneously measured. The tests revealed that the pressure wave velocity decreased with the support stiffness. The difference in pressure wave velocity between the quasi-rigid and flexible systems was up to 2.04%. In addition, we found that the pressure wave velocity does not vary with the initial Reynolds number. This research may be beneficial for water hammer analyses in coil pipes.
