The grab for lifting heavy loads has two curved jaws (1) which are pivoted to each other by a bolt (4). Each arm (1) has an extension (2) which extends beyond the bolt. The outer end of each extension is connected to a link (3) and the links are pivoted to an eye which receives the crane hook. A guide plate (5) attached to the extensions (2) has specially shaped grooves which guide the lower end of a strut which has its upper end attached to one of the links (3). These grooves control the movement of the strut which in turn controls the movement of the jaws (1) so that the load is gripped as it is raised but is automatically released from the grab when placed on the ground.
