The system measures light transmission through a perforated grid (7) for optical contrast. The grid (7) is arranged in an intermediate image plane of an optical beam path of a microscope and is illuminated such that a greater proportion of light from a light source (1) can pass through the perforated screen of the grid plate (7). A lens grid (3) with a lens system is accurately aligned with the grid (7). The lens grid (3) depicts a light source frame from the source (1) which is congruent with the screen. A lens system (5) aligns the source frame with the grid (7) so the light beams from the lenses are accurately guided through the holes. The light source (1) may be a high pressure Hg-, Xe- or Hg-Xe lamp and the intermediate images in the binocular tube are evaluated electronically using a video camera (34). USE/ADVANTAGE - Achieves high quality results for probes, flourescence and polarising microscopes. Can be easily integrated into known optical instruments.
