The vehicle recognition devices (FE) record the presence of parked vehicles and send appropriate messages through modems and the public switched telephone network, or another suitable network, to a traffic control centre equipped with supervisory desks and monitors. The vehicles may be detected acoustically, optically, inductively, capacitively or by infrared sensing, from parking meters. Similar arrangements may be made for monitoring forbidden or restricted public parking areas or densely occupied traffic lanes. ADVANTAGE - Rapid automatic surveying finds available parking spaces reliably and gives early warning of impending difficulty in traffic flow management.
