In quantitative spectral analytical processes in which sample constituent concns. are determined from the absorption at several fixed wave number points in the absorption sepctrum, (a) the concns. are calculated using a concn. determination matrix previously derived from a combination of reference spectra for constituents of known concns.; (b) the sample constituents are subdivided into several groups, and then frequency bands, used for spectrometric analysis of the respective gps, are subdivided into blocks for each gp.; (c) suitable gps. of constituents are established for several sample types for prescribing gps. of wave number points for the corresp. concn. calculations and one wave number point gp. is selected for calculation of the constituent concns. in a respective sample; or (d) suitable gps. of constituents and concn. ranges are established for several sample types for prescribing groups of wave number points for calculating the concns. of these combinations and then one wave number point gp. is selected for calculation of the constituent concns. in a respective sample. USE/ADVANTAGE - The processes are useful for determining concns. of gases etc. using a Fourier transformation IR spectrometer, e.g. for analysing exhaust gas from a methanol- driven automobile. Several constituents can be determined simply and accurately in several sample types using only a small concn. calculation matrix.
