The invention relates to a method and a device for the coherent measurement of the four polarimetric terms of the matrix for back-scattering from all or part of a radar target, comprising the following five stages: First stage: generation of an electromagnetic wave consisting of one or more pulses of accurately known frequencies. Second stage: modulation of this wave according to two different modulation laws, thus creating two distinct waves. Third stage: transmission of the two aforesaid distinct modulated waves along two channels with different polarisations. Fourth stage: reception of the signal back-scattered by the target along two channels polarised differently from each other. Fifth stage: demodulation of each of these reception channels according to two replicates of the different modulation laws used on transmission. Application to surveillance, tracking or measuring radars. IMAGE
