The present invention relates to an automatic device for protecting town dwellers at pedestrian crossings. The device comprises, according to Figure 1: - two cabins (1) and (2) with no base, having protective sides (3) and façades (4) which are open on the pedestrian crossing, these cabins being guided by rails (5) and displaced from one pavement to the other on the pedestrian crossing in a shuttle movement. The pedestrians walk inside the moving cabins and are protected by the sides (3) of the cabins which pass each other, - two fixtures (6) and (7) which are formed in the widths of the two opposite pavements for receiving the cabins in a standby position, - a drive mechanism fitted in the cabins, or fixed (8) and situated under the roadway and under or on the pavements, - a device for displaying advertising and/or information (9) on the sides and façades of the cabins.
