A breathing aid for laryngotomy or tracheostomy patients comprises a filter housing 1 of plastics material, which holds a replaceable filter 5 and which is made in one piece with a perforated cover 6 hinged to the filter house by a flexible integral strip 7 and further comprising an air pre-heating shield or hood 13 removably attached to said cover and having a downwardly-directed channel 12 through which the inhaled air has to pass before it reaches the filter. Said shield or hood has a recess 17 which by cooperation with said strip (7) guarantees the correct orientation of the hood on the cover so that the channel 12 is downwardly direct in use on the wearer to avoid water entry therethrough. e.g. during washing. The filter housing is secured to an adhesive foil 11, which has rectangular or square shape, and so orientated in relation to the foil that the pivot center of the hinge (7) will be parallel to one of the sides of the foil.
