A gun for humanely killing or stunning animals which operates solely by spring means (24) to discharge a captive missile (4, 5) so that upon actuation of a trigger (14) a captive missile (4, 5) is discharged to a limited extent from the barrel (3) and is subsequently urged back into the barrel by expansion of previously compressed air in the barrel (3).
