PURPOSE: To provide a low power A/D converter for a transplantable medical care device. CONSTITUTION: A converter comprises a high-frequency oscillator 10 to generate a high-frequency higher than the main clock frequency of a medical care device, and an oscillator gate circuit 12 to actuate the oscillator to the voltage- dependent, variable time intervals. The gate circuit 12 includes a voltage- controlled single stabilized multi-vibrator 16 to generate the gate control pulse of the pulse width corresponding to the signal value sensed by the medical care device. A timing controller 18 feeds a trigger pulse to a single stabilized multi-vibrator at the first point with the time intervals, and generates a possible pulse at the second point. The converter makes the oscillator active at the second point in response to the possible pulse, and makes the oscillator inactive in response to the gate control pulse at the end of the time intervals. A counter connected to the oscillator counts the clock pulse between the second point and the final point of the time intervals. The power consumption of the A/D converter is reduced.
