PURPOSE: To provide a low-density insulating thermostructural composite mate rial having excellent properties of heat resistance, mechanical resistance and thermal and sound insulation and the like, by laminating previously machined glass type skins on an expanded glass foam cake alternately forming a sandwich structure. CONSTITUTION: The material is obtained by placing on a rigid support 1 a condenced glass/SiC skin 2, which is produced with the known process and modified to give a good surface condition, the modification being done at the top surface 2a of the skin 2. An expanded glass foam cake 3 corresponding to the final shape of the desired article is placed on the surface 2a. The cake 3 is covered with the other skin 4 modified at its bottom surface. The rigid confronting die 5 is placed over the composed unit to which a uniformly distributed mechanical pressure P is applied. Then the unit is set in an oven and heated under air at the atmospheric pressure.
