PURPOSE:To provide an amorphous alloy which has superior soft magnetic properties suitable for use as a material for magnetic heads as well as excellent thermal stability, and also has the ability to attain supersaturation magnetic flux density, by compounding Co, Ta and Zr in a specific ratio. CONSTITUTION:A thermally stable amorphous alloy has a composition represented by CoXTaYZrZ; where X+Y+Z=100%, 77%X87%, 13%Y20%, 0%Z5%, and 13%Y+Z23%. In an alloy having this composition, Ta is a principal element to make the alloy amorphous and Zr, also the same kind of element, and they are added for the purpose of removing the negative magnetostriction of Co-Ta system. Since this alloy maintains superior soft magnetic properties even at the high temps. in the stage of heat treatment, it can be used as a magnetic material for magnetic heads.
