PURPOSE: To obtain spring steel excellent in heat settling properties and punching properties by austempering treatment free from the need of the handling time for the prevention of deformation caused by heat treatment. ;CONSTITUTION: Spring steel contg., by weight, 0.40 to 0.70% C, 0.10 to 0.95% Si, 0.50 to 2.00% Mn, 0.10 to 1.50% Cr, 0.05 to 0.50% V and 0.010 to 0.O30% N and, furthermore, contg. one or ≥ two kinds among 0.03 to 0.40% S, 0.001 to 0.15% Te and 0.05 to 0.20% Pb, and the balance Fe with impurity elements is prepd. Mn improves its hardenability to form its structure into an ordinary austempered structure and, furthermore, by the addition of V and N, its crystalline grains are refined and precipitately hardened to improve its heat settling properties as well as, by the addition of S, Te and Pb, its punching properties are improved.
