PURPOSE:To adequately select a side shim of optimum thickness by measuring dimension while controlling a meshing condition of a pinion gear with a side gear so that high accurate measurement can be performed, in the case of a device for selecting thickness of the position adjusting side shim in a differential gear. CONSTITUTION:In the case of selecting a side shim, first after pinion gears 3, 4, pinion shims 11, 12 and side gears 5, 6 of a differential gear have been mounted to a measuring jig 15, positioning means 18, 19 are actuated to perform positioning of each gear 3, 4 and shim 11, 12. Next, retaining metal fixtures 20, 21 are actuated, and after zeroing backlash between each gear, a drive gear 58 is lowered down while slowly rotated and meshed with both the side gears 5, 6. In the case that a dog 68 on a rotary shaft 57 is detected by a sensor 69, the drive gear 58 is stopped in its rotation and rotated with its stopped position serving as the original point to measure dimensions M3, M4 of the side gears 5, 6 in each rotation, and thickness of side shims 13, 14 is obtained from a mean value of these dimensions.
