PURPOSE:To obtain a good monomolecular film by emitting excitation light on the monomolecular film on a vapor-liquid interface, catching the excitation light from an arbitrary position of the monomolecular film with an optical measure, and detecting the change of fluorescence intensity of the monomolecular film to measure the surface pressure. CONSTITUTION:Light receiving elements are provided to a Wilhelmi surface pressure gage 3 previously calibrated and the ocular element of a fluorescence microscope 4, the fluorescence intensity near a Wilhelmi plate 5 is measured, and the relation between the molecular area and the surface pressure and the fluorescence intensity when a barrier 2 is compressed is determined beforehand. Next, a monomolecular film developed in a trough 1 is compressed with a barrier 2. Then, the excitation light oscillated from the light source 7 for excitation is emitted on the monomolecular film through the incident optical system 4a of an optical fiber 6 and the microscope 4, a dichroic mirror 4b and an objective lens 4c. The fluorescence radiated from the monomolecular film is led to a detector 10 through the microscope 4. The comparison of the surface pressure distribution and the surface pressure within the trough 1 can be in real time made by moving the microscope 4 to measure hereupon.
