PURPOSE:To stably and uniformly form a film, by a method wherein a substrate and a movable barrier are arranged between the inner walls of a trough in opposed relation to each other and the auxiliary movable barriers integrally moving along with the movable barrier are provided on both inner wall sides to surround the surface of a monomolecular film developing liquid. CONSTITUTION:The movable barrier 3 bringing the monomolecular film of the substance on the surface of a liquid to set surface pressure and the auxiliary movable barriers 6, 6a integrally provided along with the movable barrier 3 between the monomolecular film and inner walls 4, 4a are moved in definite relative relation to obtain the set surface pressure. At this time, the width of a substrate is made equal to the length of the movable barrier 3 and the width between the auxiliary movable barriers 6, 6a to prevent the monomolecular film from creeping from the end of the substrate 8. Since the monomolecular film is not brought into contact with the inner walls 4, 4a because of the auxiliary movable barriers 6, 6a, disturbance due to slip contact is not generated and the monomolecular film uniform in molecular density and monomolecular film arrangement is built up.
