PURPOSE:To provide a nonvolatile persistent polymeric antibacterial.antifungal agent containing a cationic poly-p-hydroxystyrene derivative having a specific substituent as an active ingredient, having a wide antimicrobial spectrum. CONSTITUTION:An antibacterial.antifungal agent contains a quaternary ammonium salt and a polymer, does not cause the pollution of environments and the abnormal circulation of ecology, and is harmless for human bodies. The polymer is constituted from units of formula I (X1 is Cl, Br, I; R1 is 1-2C alkyl, 1-2C hydroxyalkyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl, phenyl, fluorophenyl, nitrophenyl, pyridyl; when p is 1, p is 0,1; when p is 2, p is 0) as essential units and, when other units are required, further units of formula II (p' is 0-2), has a polymerization degree of 5-100, and has halogen atoms and N-substituted piperazinomethyl groups in the numbers of 0-1.9 and 0.1-2, respectively, per the hydroxystyrene unit, the sum of the numbers being =2.
