PURPOSE: To remove sulfur compounds from an industrial gas by using a catalyst which is produced by dispersing a mixture consisting of an oxide of a kind of element selected from Group VIB of the Periodic System of Elements and two oxides of two kind of elements selected from Group IB, IIB, VIB and VIIIB of the Periodic System of Elements into a suitable inorganic supporting body. CONSTITUTION: Aluminium oxide, a spinel, especially magnesium/aluminium oxide, a zeolite, a mica or the like are used as an inorganic supporting body not having defects of abrasion and combustibility. A catalyst not having defects of abrasion and combustibility has a surface area of about 20-400 m2 /g. Preferable metal oxides are an oxide of Cu, Zn, Mo, W, Fe, Co and Ni. The inorganic supporting body is impregnated with each metal oxide of about 0.05-4% wt. based on an amount of a material of the supporting body. The specially preferable catalyst is produced from an aluminium oxide supporting body impregnated with at least three kinds of oxides selected from copper oxide, iron oxide, molybdenum oxide, chromium oxide and zinc oxide.
