PURPOSE:To provide a C-language program developing editor capable of informing the function name of a function belonging to a detected character string to an operator at the time of retrieving the character string. CONSTITUTION:Steps S1 to S3 (S1' to S3') are constituted of a normal forward (backward) retrieving procedure, and at the time of succeeding in the retrieval of a specified character string, a text around the detecting position of the character string is displayed in a text display area on a screen. In step S4, the function definition leading part of a function which may include the character string on the detecting position is searched backwards from the detecting position. At the time of succeeding in the search, the function name is displayed in a message display area on the screen in step S5.
