PURPOSE: To make a watchman unnecessary by a method wherein an ultrasonic wave generator/receiver is set in a water tank and the height of a fluidized bed surface in cleaning by active carbon is detected and at the same time, the height is compared with the reference height and warning is outputted when the height of the fluidized bed surface is higher than the reference height. ;CONSTITUTION: An ultrasonic wave generator/receiver 1 is installed in a water- purifier tank 10, and the height Hm of the swelled-up fluidized bed 18 in cleaning by active carbon 14 fluidized by back flow water is detected by propagation time of the ultrasonic wave. The height Hm of the fluidized bed 18 is compared with a set value of the reference height Hr, and in the case where the heights are in Hm Hr, warning is outputted by means of a buzzer or a rotary lamp 38. Then the height Hm of the fluidized bed 18 is adjusted by operation of a valve 17a.
