PURPOSE: To obtain the subject whiskers for a fiber reinforced metal-based composite material having excellent thermal stability and ensuring higher strength by heat treatment by specifying the contents of Al and Nb as impurities. ;CONSTITUTION: The objective whiskers contain Al and Nb as impurities in i0.6 molar ratio of Al2O3 to Nb2O5. When the whiskers are used. the strength is not reduced during heat treatment and a composite material having excellent mechanical strength is obtd. The contents of impurities other than Al and Nb in the whiskers are preferably ≤1% (expressed in terms of oxides). The whiskers are typically produced as follows; a mixture of Ti- and K-contg. compds. as starting materials blended in a ratio giving K2O.TiO2 (n=2-4) is fired at 900-1,200°C to obtain massive potassium titanate whiskers, these whiskers are singly separated by immersion in water and an acid is added to adjust the pH to 9.3-9.7. After the compsn. is varied so as to attain 5.9-6.9 molar ratio of TiO2 to K2O, the whiskers are heated at 900-1,150°C for ≥1hr and washed with an acid.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
