The present invention relates to a process for separating iodine and its compounds from the carbonylation products acetic acid, acetanhydride or ethylidene diacetate, obtained in the carbonylation of dimethyl ether, methyl acetate or methanol in the presence of iodine containing catalysts , characterized in that to lower the amount of the total iodine that contaminates the carbonylation products to levels below 20 ppb of iodine, the carbonylation products are treated at temperatures of 20 to 200 degree sC with peracetic acid, diacetyl peroxide or the compounds that form to the above under the reaction conditions and are distilled off.
