The method includes modelling (21) the time envelope of reflected sound echo signals, for at least two different types of marine bed. These models are then held in memory (22). The echo produced by a given area in response to a predetermined sound transmission signal is then detected. The nature of the marine bed is then determined by comparison of the newly detected signal with those stored in memory. USE - Identification of nature of marine bed, to a depth of up to 3 metres, using echography as is available for depth testing and fish location.
