The reactor for a process in chemical synthesis, extn. or refining which is known to be facilitated by high pressure applied to a liq. or suspension is supplied with this fluid via a vertical tube extending from an upper source, e.g. at ground level; the reactor itself is at considerably lower level, e.g. at the bottom of a mine-shaft. The reaction prod. is returned up a riser pipe(s) to an upper level receiver. Riser and faller pipes may be in heat-exchanging contact, e.g. as a concentric pair.
