CrichlowABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURERuminal lactic acidosis develops in ruminantanimals following the ingestion of large amounts of unac-customed feeds that are rich in readily fermentable carbo-hydrates. Characteristic symptoms of this disease includesystemic acidosis, ruminal acidosis, forestomach stasisor forestomach hypomotility, inappetence, depression andhemoconcentration. Alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonists havebeen found to be capable of re-establishing forestomachmotility that has been lost or severely diminished inruminants suffering from ruminal lactic acidosis. Theseantagonist compounds have also been found to be effectivein the treatment of ruminants experiencing ruminal lacticacidosis.
