PERFUSION OF PERFLUOROCARBON COMPOUND EMULSIONDURING PERCUTANEOUS TRANSLUMINAL ANGIOPLASTYAbstract of the DisclosureA percutaneous transluminal angioplasty procedure isdisclosed which comprises positioning a balloon-tippedcatheter within a stenotic region of an artery, inflatingthe balloon one or more times to enlarge the innerdiameter of the artery and passing an oxygenatedperfluorocarbon compound emulsion through the lumen ofthe catheter and into the artery during ballooninflation. The oxygenated perfluorocarbon compound ispassed into the artery at a rate of from about 20 cc/min.to about 150 cc/min. to prevent physiologically damagingischemia. Balloon inflation times range from 10 secondsto 30 minutes.
