In a process for the treatment of refuse, especially bio waste, wet waste, tailings and industrial waste, for the anaerobic fermentation of its organic components of biological origin, a readily dehydratable suspension of the organic substances of biological origin is first prepared, in a pretreatment stage, by mechanical treatment with selective dissolution and disintegration of the organic substances of biological origin, in which process, as a function of the selected solids concentration, the action of fluidic forces is controlled in such a way that the organic foreign substances of non-biological origin are not subjected to any substantial comminuting stress before they are separated at the end of the pretreatment, and in which process organic foreign substances of non-biological origin are separated off. The suspension is subsequently converted by means of an anaerobic fermentation process to give bio gas and compost-like recyclings. For the gentle treatment of solids contained in the crude waste in the pretreatment step, the speed of the running wheel 14 of the dissolution container 13 of the apparatus according to the invention is controlled as a function of the solids concentration, which results in a high degree of effectiveness and simultaneously in noticeable energy saving.
