In the device for the ultrasonic inspection of elongated, rotation-symmetrical test-pieces (34), especially pipes, for material faults or for their geometrical data by the single-probe pulse reflection process, a row (26) of several, i.e. n, test-probe (30) arranged side by side in the axial direction of the test-piece is moved spirally in relation to the casing of the test-piece (34), when the n test-probe (30) describe n adjacent and mutally parallel test track centres (38 to 46). According to the invention, there is a second row of test-probe (28) which performs the same movement as the first row (26), is as identical to it as possible, has especially the same number n of test-probe (30) and is geometrically so arranged that the axial mutual displacement d of two rows of test-probe (26, 28) is, as far as possible, smaller than the distance between centres b of two adjacent test-prove (30) and its test-probe (30) lie between the test track centres (38 to 46) of the first row of test-probe (26) so that the n test-probe (30) of the second row (28) describe test tracks (48 to 56) lying between those of the first row.
