In the continuous preparation of isobutyric acid by Koch's synthesis from propene, carbon monoxide and water in hydrogen fluoride as the Koch's catalyst, the formation of higher ketones as secondary products is suppressed when the starting materials are mixed at a temperature below 30 DEG C under pressure, the reaction mixture is converted without back-mixing and its temperature is allowed to rise to at least 60 DEG C.
