The upper plate (15) of the heat exchanger is arranged above the level (8) of the liquid metal in the reactor vessel. A bell-shaped wall (30) is attached around the enclosure (12) of the bundle (13) and defines an annular space (31) communicating with the interior of the enclosure (12) via an opening (22) forming the entry window of the heat exchanger. The upper part of the annular space (31) is connected by a pipe (32) to a volume filled with inert gas. The bundle is of increased height and the bringing into operation and the stopping of the intermediate exchanger can be obtained by making the inert gas enter or allowing it to escape through the pipe (32). The heat exchanger also comprises a device for drawing in the fluid contained in the upper part of the annular space (31). IMAGE
