The emptying device provides a combined lifting and tipping movement to allow the contents of the rubbish container to be discharged. It comprises a frame (111) supporting the container to be emptied and an electrical control unit for actuating a hydraulic or pneumatic lifting and tipping mechanism acting on the frame under control of a switch actuated by the rubbish container and by an independent manual operating control. Pref. the switch uses a pair of spaced contacts (94,96) attached to the frame (111) for movement in synchronism with the lifting and tipping of the frame to allow a further movement of the latter after the initial lifting and tipping upon closure of the contacts by the correct position of the container.
