A gas-generating mass and ignition equipment are accommodated inside an inflatable air bag. One or more gas-generating modules are fixed to the inside of the bag, these comprising strips of two-part hook-clasp fasteners, in embossed and covering halves securing the mass between them, this being azide-based with a bonding agent. The mass can comprise potassium-, sodium- or ammonium-nitrate mixed with sodium-azide. The mass can be in sheet- or alternatively granular form, in the latter case with a particle size of 0.2 to 2.0mm. On the covering and/or embossed halves there can be a central coating strip of fast-burning ignition material. ADVANTAGE - Low cost, chemically stable, and generates no poisonous combustion gas.
