The sealing ring is for large-dia. flange joints in particular, as used with chemical reactor vessels, having a large number of annular or spiral packing strips bearing against each other. The strips are formed by a large number of strings without a wire core. The strings comprise strips parted off from a sheet of sealing graphite. The strips are held together by metal clips to form the ring. The strips can comprise several strings woven together, and can be of rectangular or square cross-section. ADVANTAGE - Ring is resistant to high temp. and pressure and diffusive gas, without using mineral fibre.
