Mercerisation comprises winding fabric forwards and backwards under controlled tension between beams. The fabric receives a caustic treatment in the forward run and is rinsed and stabilised on the backward run. The fabric can be run forwards and backwards several times. Pref. fabric is run through treatment rollers and a bath between beams. In the inlet/outlet zone are squeeze roller pairs which are actuated by hydraulic cylinders. The pipework connects the bath alternately to caustic soln. or to deal with the rinsing water which is supplied through sprays. A cooling arrangement keeps the caustic soln. at the optimum temp. (13 deg.C). USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for small amts. of fabric and the process cycle can be automated.
