The method is for the topping of hot rolled rods. The wire rods (1) are fanned out on a transporter (5-7), are moved sidewards, and positioned according to the information coming from an image analysis circuit (13). The transporter is lifted or lowered in sections, rod ends are topped simultaneously or successively, and the transporter is returned to its normal position. The transporter is then moved back into the rolling line, and the fanned-out wire rods are collected. Despite the sideward movement, fanning-out and collection of wire rods take place in the rolling line, without impeding normal laying processes. Two transporters are rigidly coupled parallel to each other, to form a tandem complex (4), and are positioned alternately in the rolling line. ADVANTAGE - Topping is carried out without impeding laying and collection of wire coils.
