In an enzymatic process for prodn. of hides and skins ready for tanning in the waterworks, involving the steps of soaking, washing, dehairing and bating, in aq. baths, each bath has pH 8-13 and contains a lipase L with activity optimum at pH 9-11, and (a) no tenside is used in soaking, and (b) in washing, dehairing and bathing, tensides are not used or are used in greatly reduced amts., depending on the fat content of the hide and skin.
